Air-to-air heat pumps employ either fan coil units (‘blowers’) or air ducting pipes to disperse warm air. Blowers are typically positioned high on the wall, a practical solution in spaces with limited availability. Ducting systems are more commonly integrated into new build properties, with ducts discreetly installed within ceiling voids to minimise visual impact.
These heat pumps come in single-head or multi-head configurations, where ‘head’ signifies the number of blowers in operation. Single-head setups, featuring a sole external unit and a single internal blower, generally suit the smallest homes or single-room heating. For larger spaces with more than two rooms, multi-head systems or ducted setups are typically required
Installing blowers in air-to-air systems is more cost-effective due to the absence of a wet central heating system. Multi-head setups involve pipes connecting the external heat capture unit to each blower, similar to the piping in traditional boilers running to radiators. Typically, these pipes are discreetly housed in slim plastic channels along the upper edges of rooms to maintain an unobtrusive appearance.
The operational costs of your heat pump will depend on its design and usage patterns. Additionally, the impact on your energy bill savings will be influenced by the type of system you’re replacing.
