Expert home air conditioning installations: keeping your home cool in summer and warm in winter

Residential Air Conditioning Across Brighton & Sussex

Whether it’s a conservatory that overheats in summer, a loft conversion that never stays cool, or a garden office that’s too cold to work in during winter, air conditioning makes every room in your home comfortable year-round.

More than just cooling

Modern residential air conditioning systems do far more than cool a room. Most units we install work as air-to-air heat pumps, providing efficient heating in winter and cooling in summer from a single system. They also filter the air as they run, reducing dust, pollen, and humidity. For many homeowners across Sussex, a single wall-mounted unit is enough to transform the comfort of a bedroom, lounge, or home office.

At Eaglereach Mechanical, we install systems from leading manufacturers including Mitsubishi Electric, Mitsubishi Heavy, Panasonic, and Daikin. Every installation starts with a free home survey where we assess the room, talk through your options, and recommend the right system for the space. Our fully insured, DBS and Trading Standards approved engineers are trusted by homeowners across Brighton, Hove, and throughout Sussex.

What to expect from your installation

Installation for a standard room typically takes a single day. We handle everything from mounting the indoor unit and running pipework to commissioning the system and talking you through the controls. Installations start from around £1,300 for a single split system, with exact pricing depending on the room size, system type, and any additional requirements.

For homes that need cooling in more than one room, multi-split systems connect multiple indoor units to a single outdoor unit, keeping the installation neat and cost-effective.

Not sure which system would suit your home? Our guide to which air conditioning system is best compares the main options, and our air conditioner sizing guide explains how room size, insulation, and glazing affect what you need.

Air Conditioning for Every Room in Your Home

Some rooms in a house are simply harder to keep comfortable than others. South-facing windows, poor ventilation, rising heat, or a room that gets little use of the central heating can all leave a space too warm in summer and too cold in winter. A wall-mounted air conditioning system solves both problems from a single unit, and below we look at the rooms homeowners across Sussex most often ask us about.

Bedrooms

A bedroom that holds heat through the night is one of the most common reasons people get in touch. Once the sun has been on the glass all day, the room stays warm long after you have gone to bed, and a fan only moves the warm air around. Sleep suffers, and so does the next day.

Air conditioning fixes this by setting and holding a steady temperature while you sleep. The units we install run very quietly, so there is nothing to disturb you, and in winter the same unit warms the room instead. If you are fitting air conditioning in a child's room, our guide on whether air conditioning is safe for babies and young children covers the practical points worth knowing.

Living rooms and lounges

The lounge is usually the busiest room in the house and often the one with the most glazing. Large windows and patio doors look great, but they let in a lot of solar gain, which can make the room uncomfortable on a sunny afternoon and into the evening when you most want to relax in it.

A single wall-mounted unit is enough for most living rooms, keeping the space cool in summer and warm in winter. Because the system filters the air as it runs, it also helps with dust and pollen. For larger or knocked-through lounges, a higher-capacity unit or a ceiling cassette can spread air more evenly across the room.

Kitchens

Kitchens generate a lot of heat. Ovens, hobs, and appliances all add warmth, and many kitchens have limited ventilation beyond an extractor fan and a window. In summer the room can become genuinely unpleasant to cook in, and that heat then drifts into the rest of the house.

Air conditioning gives you proper temperature control while you cook, and helps clear the warm, humid air that builds up afterwards. Wall space is often tight in a kitchen, so during the free home survey we will find a position for a compact indoor unit that works without getting in the way of cupboards or worktops.

Loft conversions

Heat rises, which makes a loft conversion the hottest room in most houses by a clear margin. A converted loft also tends to have sloped ceilings, less insulation depth than the floors below, and roof windows that catch the sun for much of the day.

Air conditioning is often the only practical way to make a loft space comfortable year-round, cooling it in summer and topping up the heating in winter. We have a dedicated page on air conditioning for loft conversions that explains how we approach sloped ceilings and limited wall space.

Open-plan living spaces

Open-plan kitchen-diners and through-lounges are popular, but they are harder to keep at an even temperature than a single enclosed room. A larger volume of air needs more capacity, and warm or cold spots can develop at opposite ends if the system is not sized correctly for the space.

For open-plan areas we usually recommend either a higher-capacity wall unit positioned to circulate air across the whole space, or a ducted system that distributes air discreetly through ceiling vents with very little visible hardware. Where a property has several rooms opening off one space, a multi-room heat pump setup can condition the whole area from one outdoor unit. Getting the capacity right matters here more than anywhere, which is why every quote starts with a proper survey. Our multi-room installation case study shows how this works in a real Sussex home.

Some spaces have their own particular challenges, from conservatories and garden offices to home gyms and flats. You will find dedicated guidance on those below, and whichever rooms you are looking to improve, the starting point is the same: a free home survey where we assess the space and recommend a system that suits how you use the room.

Whole house install

Just had full house, 5 units and one external unit. Nick came and looked, gave a price which was good, turned up Monday and fitted the indoor units. No pipes or wires showing, very clean, no mess. Then he moved to outside and I was impressed with how neat the job was.

Residential Air Conditioning FAQs

How much does it cost to install air conditioning in a house?

The cost of air conditioning installation in a home in the UK usually starts from around £1,750 + VAT for a single split system in a standard room. The final price will depend on factors such as the size of the space, the type of unit you choose (wall-mounted, ceiling cassette, or ducted), and any additional installation requirements. Larger or more complex systems may cost more, which is why we always recommend arranging a free, no-obligation survey to receive a tailored quote for your home.

What is the 20 rule for air conditioners?

The “20-degree rule” suggests you shouldn’t set your air conditioner more than 20°F (around 11°C) lower than the outdoor temperature. Doing so can overwork the system, reduce efficiency, and increase energy bills. In practice, we recommend aiming for a comfortable, stable temperature rather than forcing your AC to run flat-out.

What is the 3 minute rule for air conditioners?

The “3-minute rule” means you should wait at least three minutes before restarting your air conditioner after turning it off. This allows the system’s refrigerant pressure to equalise, protecting the compressor from unnecessary strain and helping your unit last longer.

Is air conditioning worth it in the UK climate?

With UK summers becoming warmer and heatwaves more frequent, air conditioning is becoming a more practical and popular choice for many households and businesses. Not only does it provide cooling, but most modern systems also offer heating and air filtration, giving you comfort all year round. Many people find it a worthwhile investment for improved sleep, increased productivity, and overall well-being.

What size air conditioner do I need for my home?

Sizing depends on room dimensions, insulation, and how the space is used. Our air conditioner sizing guide explains how to work out the right capacity, or get in touch for a free site survey.

How much does air conditioning cost to run?

Running costs depend on the system size, how efficient it is, how often you use it, and your electricity tariff. As a rough guide, a modern wall-mounted unit cooling a typical bedroom or living room costs only a few pence per hour to run, and most modern systems also work in reverse to provide heating, which can be cheaper than gas central heating in milder months. For a full breakdown of typical UK figures and what affects them, read our guide to UK air conditioning running costs.

Is air conditioning safe for babies and young children?

Yes, when set up and used sensibly. The key things to get right are temperature (around 18–20°C is generally recommended for sleep), avoiding direct airflow on cribs or beds, and keeping filters clean. We’ve covered the topic in detail in our guide on whether air conditioning is bad for babies.

Can you install air conditioning in my garden office?

Yes, garden offices are one of our most popular residential installs. Whether you’re working from a compact studio or a larger purpose-built space, we can fit a discreet system that keeps you comfortable year-round, and most modern systems provide heating in the colder months too. See our garden office air conditioning page for examples and details.
